Summer is here in full swing, gracing us with its warming embrace. Summer is synonymous with outdoor activities; from playing sports to beach days to hiking and fishing, the warm months give us ample time to enjoy nature in its verdant wonder. One of the most important things to remember when enjoying the warm weather is to stay hydrated. With hotter temperatures, our bodies sweat a lot more to cool down, which can lead to dehydration if the levels of water are not adequately replenished. There are many symptoms of dehydration, the most obvious being thirst, although this can easily be dismissed. Other symptoms include dark yellow and strong-smelling urine; feeling dizzy or lightheaded; feeling fatigued; dry mouth, lips, and eyes; and infrequent urination (fewer than 4 times a day).
In simplest terms, dehydration is when the body loses more fluids than it receives. Fluid loss can be caused by sweating, excessive urination (typically from diuretics like coffee and alcohol), vomiting, and diarrhea. When someone is mildly dehydrated, drinking water may be sufficient enough to replenish their fluid levels. However, in moderate to severe cases of dehydration, water is often not enough on its own, and electrolytes (salts) must be consumed in order to restore proper levels of hydration. Millions of Americans are mildly dehydrated every day, with as many as 4 out of 5 people saying that they do not drink the recommended amount of water every day. This can lead to problems with energy levels and cognitive function, which can result in feeling tired throughout the day and not being able to think clearly or problem-solve effectively. Severe dehydration is a serious medical concern that often needs to be treated with hydration IVs. If left untreated, dehydration can lead to permanent complications, and can even be fatal.
Dehydration can develop by not drinking enough fluid or by losing more fluid than what is consumed. Fluid can be lost through tears, sweat, diarrhea, vomiting, and urine. The severity of dehydration can depend on a number of factors, including climate, level of physical activity, diet, history of dehydration, and the overall health of an individual. Dehydration can be staved off by drinking an adequate amount of water, especially if it contains a slice of lemon or lime, as these fruits have a high amount of salts that the body needs to stay properly hydrated. Other common drinks that aid in hydration are sports drinks, as they contain a large amount of electrolytes.
The signs of severe dehydration include:
• Infrequent urination or having very dark yellow urine
• Very dry skin
• Feeling dizzy
• Rapid heartbeat
• Rapid breathing
• Sunken eyes
• Sleepiness, lack of energy, confusion, or irritability
• Fainting
Moderate to severe dehydration requires medical attention. If you are experiencing any signs of severe dehydration (as discussed in the question above), it is imperative to receive professional medical attention as soon as possible. Severe dehydration can lead to a head injury, urinary and kidney problems, seizures, low blood volume shock (hypovolemic shock), and even death.
While enjoying the warm summer weather, it is important to stay hydrated! If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of dehydration, it is vital to receive prompt medical attention.
